Austrian influencer Stefanie Pieper, 32, was found dead in a suitcase buried in a forest in November 2025. Now, a prosecutor has revealed a chilling new possibility: she may have been buried alive.

Dr. Christian Kroschl, the prosecutor leading the case, told Austrian outlet Bild that Pieper’s autopsy could not determine the exact time of death. “It is entirely possible that she was still alive when she was placed in the suitcase,” Kroschl stated. However, he added that strangulation before being placed in the suitcase is equally possible.

The Discovery and Investigation

Pieper, a professional makeup artist with over 40,000 Instagram followers, was reported missing on November 23 after she failed to appear for a scheduled photoshoot. Her disappearance prompted a search by the Styrian Police Department.

Her ex-boyfriend, whose name has not been publicly released, was quickly identified as a suspect. He was arrested and extradited from Slovenia to Graz, Austria. On November 28, he confessed to the crime and led police to the remote forest where Pieper’s body was found inside a buried suitcase.

Autopsy Findings and Conflicting Possibilities

According to Dr. Kroschl, the autopsy confirmed that Pieper had been subjected to violence, but it could not definitively establish whether she was killed by strangulation or suffocated inside the suitcase.

In December, Patricia Weber, deputy head of media relations at the Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office, told People magazine that the autopsy confirmed Pieper “had been subjected to violence” prior to her death. The suspect remains in custody.

The ambiguity of the cause of death has left investigators and the public with two equally disturbing possibilities:

  • Strangulation before being placed in the suitcase
  • Being buried alive inside the closed suitcase

Public Reaction and Tributes

Following the news, Pieper’s Instagram page was flooded with condolences. Her last post, shared on November 9, showed her vlogging a routine trip to get a pedicure — a stark contrast to the tragedy that would unfold weeks later.

One fan wrote:

“I am deeply sorry that we have failed structurally as a society to such an extent that women pay for the end of a relationship at worst with their lives. My voice will be louder and clearer from now on. We owe this to you and all the other victims!”

Others expressed horror at the possibility that Pieper may have been conscious while buried, calling for stricter protections for victims of domestic violence and stalking.

Why This Case Is Drawing Global Attention

The case has garnered international headlines not only because of its brutality but also because of the influencer factor. Pieper’s online presence — built on lifestyle, beauty, and personal vlogs — created a public persona that made her death feel personal to thousands of followers.

From a true-crime perspective, the case highlights several critical issues:

  • The dangers of intimate partner violence
  • Gaps in cross-border law enforcement (extradition from Slovenia to Austria)
  • The role of social media in amplifying missing-person cases

Justice Pending

As the investigation continues, the Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office has not announced a trial date. However, with a confession and forensic evidence in hand, legal experts expect a speedy prosecution.

For now, the public is left with a haunting question: Was Stefanie Pieper conscious when she took her last breath inside that suitcase?

The answer may never be fully known — but her story has already sparked urgent conversations about violence against women and the hidden dangers that can lurk behind a curated online feed.
