How Porn Blazed the Trail for the Creator Economy

Los Angeles: Porn — or so the legend has it — pioneers every technological revolution. That may overstate porn’s role in the development and adoption of home video, online subscriptions, streaming and interactive webcams. But in the case of the creator economy, the legend holds: porn and sex workers have been monetising the illusion of online access to one’s object of desire since before Bella Thorne was even born.

Three Decades LaterThe Blurred Line

The staples of the “creator economy” were already there since the dawn of the web, as either explicitly adult content or content pitched as mainstream but with the titillating promise of occasional sexual exhibitionism. Soon there would be subscription sites, tipping systems, two-way fan/creator personalisation and, eventually, interactive streaming. Early 2000s blogs waxed futuristic about “teledildonics” — the ability to control sex toys remotely — as the ultimate form of NSFW parasocial interaction.

Three Decades Later

Three decades on, those early web promises have paid off (yes, even teledildonics). In 2026, most “porn stars” who continue working for studios do so for ever-diminishing returns — performing rates have been stagnant — but they will tell you their status as adult performers is good marketing for their fan sites.

Many younger models who sell videos or cam online don’t even bother to shoot for adult brands: their bills are being paid directly by fans on platforms like OnlyFans. Some of the younger ones proudly call themselves “adult creators” instead of coveting the title of porn star, which to Gen Z ears has started to sound as retro as a Boogie Nights DVD.

The Blurred Line

But the separation between mainstream and adult creators is not clear. Mainstream celebrities and influencers sell sexual suggestiveness — often with no nudes behind the paywall. Conversely, adult creators are eager to break the glass ceiling of censorship and discrimination by offering a plethora of SFW options: cooking shows, Get Ready With Mes, workout tips — whatever may get past the algorithm.

The rise of AI-powered moderation, however, is thwarting those efforts, as some soon-to-be-sentient bit of code may decide that your pixels are those of a sexually oriented creator — and therefore not fit for the nice parts of the internet, regardless of your cooking skills or makeup application prowess.
