Jyotika on the success of Karuppu: ‘Suriya performed brilliantly in the last ten minutes’
Mumbai, May 22, 2026 – As Suriya’s latest film ‘Karuppu’ continues its spectacular run at the box office, crossing over ₹175 crore worldwide within a week of release, his wife and fellow actor Jyotika has opened up about what the film’s success means for the family .
In a recent interview with Sudhir Srinivasan, Jyotika heaped praise on Suriya’s performance, particularly in the film’s closing moments. “In the last ten minutes of the film, Suriya has really performed brilliantly,” she said .
A rare combination of art and commerce
Jyotika acknowledged that achieving both critical acclaim and box office success is unusual. “That combination is very rare to have: a performance, plus fresh storytelling, infused with heroic moments, massy scenes—that whole combo is very rare to happen where it also makes numbers and is also loved and a performance is also taken into consideration,” she explained .
While praising the film’s artistic merits, Jyotika also emphasised the importance of commercial success. “Suriya loves telling good stories, and he always makes sure there’s a story in every film. But the box office numbers are also required. No one’s here to be at a loss,” she stated .
Defending the film’s soul
The actress responded to critics who called ‘Karuppu’ a routine mass entertainer, defending its creative intent. “It’s not just one of the run-of-the-mill commercial films. It has its own soul. It’s just been put across differently for the masses to see,” Jyotika said .
She noted that Suriya plays a God in the film—specifically the Tamil folk deity Karuppuswamy, who takes human form as a lawyer—and that “there is something to the script” beyond just commercial elements .
Celebration at home
With the film becoming Suriya’s highest-grossing domestic release, crossing ₹100 crore net in India for the first time in his career, the celebrations at the actor’s residence have been in full swing .
“We’re so overwhelmed and so happy with all the love. It’s a celebration at home!” Jyotika exclaimed .
The success is particularly meaningful after a string of underperforming films, including ‘Kanguva’ (2024) and ‘Retro’ (2025). ‘Karuppu’ has now surpassed ‘Singam 2’ (2013), which held Suriya’s lifetime domestic gross record for thirteen years .
Mixed reviews but strong box office
While the film has received mixed reviews from critics, audiences have embraced it wholeheartedly. Fans have taken to social media calling it a “paisa vasool” entertainer with “peak climax” moments .
Directed by RJ Balaji and co-starring Trisha Krishnan, ‘Karuppu’ continues to draw audiences to theatres across India .
