Bhuvan Bam’s journey from creating viral videos in his bedroom to signing a contract with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is one of the most remarkable success stories in the Indian entertainment industry. It’s a classic example of how digital creators have transitioned into mainstream cinema.
The Origin: From ₹150 a Day to YouTube Stardom
Before becoming India’s leading YouTuber, Bhuvan Bam was a struggling singer earning just ₹5,000 a month performing at small cafes and restaurants in New Delhi – roughly ₹150 a day . He had graduated from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University with a degree in History, but his dream was a career in music .
The turning point came when he posted a parody video mocking a news reporter who had insensitively questioned a woman about her son’s death during the Kashmir floods. The video went viral in Pakistan, inspiring Bam to create his own YouTube channel, BB Ki Vines, in June 2015 .
The BB Ki Vines Phenomenon
BB Ki Vines became a platform for character-driven sketches rooted in everyday Indian life – narratives about school, relationships, family, and friendships, delivered with a signature mix of humour and relatability . What stood out was Bhuvan’s all-round involvement: he wrote, acted, edited, and produced every video himself.
He became known for playing multiple characters in his videos, including a fictionalised version of himself, along with fan favourites like Sameer Fuddi, Titu Mama, Babloo, Janki, and Detective Mangloo . His ability to portray numerous characters in a single sketch became his trademark.
By 2018, he became the first Indian YouTuber to cross 10 million subscribers . His channel now boasts over 26.7 million subscribers and 5.28 billion views .
The Bridge: Web Series and OTT Success
Before entering Bollywood, Bhuvan used the OTT space as a crucial stepping stone.
Dhindora (2021): His first major foray into scripted content, based on his popular BB Ki Vines characters. He played ten different roles in the series, which garnered over 500 million views and became one of the most popular Indian web series of 2021 .
Taaza Khabar (2023): His OTT debut as a lead actor, where he played Vasant Gawde, a sanitation worker who discovers extraordinary powers. His performance was praised for its depth and intensity, earning him critical acclaim . The show’s massive popularity prompted a second season, which quickly became one of India’s most-watched web series .
These projects proved his versatility as an actor and storyteller beyond YouTube sketches.
The Bollywood Breakthrough: Dharma Productions
Bhuvan Bam made his Bollywood debut by signing with none other than Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions for a romantic comedy tentatively titled Kuku Ki Kundali, directed by Sharan Sharma (known for Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl) .
The Accidental Reveal
Interestingly, the secret was accidentally revealed by Karan Johar himself during a live conversation with comedian Zarna Garg. Johar said, “He’s been one of the biggest YouTubers and now he’s doing a film for us as the lead actor.” Realising his slip-up, he apologised, saying, “I think I f***ed up big time. It was a big secret” .
The Official Announcement
Bhuvan made it official with a heartfelt Instagram post, sharing a photo of his signed agreement with Dharma. He wrote, “Sapne dekho doston, poore ho jaate hain (Dream big, friends. Dreams really do come true)” .
The Film
He stars opposite Wamiqa Gabbi in the romantic comedy, which has been shooting in Lucknow and Kanpur . Bhuvan said about the opportunity: “My aim with this film is that whoever watches it should feel, ‘The guy on the screen is one of our own.’ I always want to give them this feeling that wherever they are from, if they work hard and are dedicated enough, they can achieve anything” .
He also admitted his vulnerability: “I get scared when good things happen to me, thinking whether I’d be able to do justice to it” .
Latest Projects
Bhuvan has begun filming Dhindora 2, with Netflix India backing the new season. He will play 9-10 characters himself in this larger production, which focuses on the beloved character Titu Mama . He is also set to star in the Prime Video historical drama The Revolutionaries .
